MICROPLASTIC CONTAMINATION
MICROPLASTIC CONTAMINATION
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a groundbreaking project to address the rising concern of microplastic contamination in our food.
The initiative, titled “Micro-and Nano-Plastics as Emerging Food Contaminants,” aims to establish validated methodologies for detecting microplastics in various food matrices.
Key Objectives:
• Develop standard protocols for analyzing microplastics.
• Conduct intra- and inter-laboratory comparisons.
• Generate critical data on consumer exposure to microplastics.
Microplastics:
Microplastics are small plastic particles that are less than 5 millimeters in size.
These tiny plastic fragments can originate from larger plastic debris that breaks down over time, or they can be intentionally manufactured at a small size, such as in some cosmetic products, cleaning agents, and industrial processes.
Why It Matters:
Microplastics (<5mm) and nanoplastics (<100 nm) pose serious health risks, including endocrine disruption, weight gain, insulin resistance, decreased reproductive health, and even cancer.
By understanding and controlling these contaminants, we can work towards a healthier future for all.
