VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO VIRUS (VDPV)

 VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO VIRUS (VDPV)

A recent case of Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus (VDPV) has been reported in Meghalaya. This comes after the World Health Organization declared India polio-free in 2014, following the last wild poliovirus case in 2011.

What is VDPV?

VDPV is a strain of poliovirus that has mutated from the weakened virus used in the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV).
While OPV contains a modified virus that helps build immunity, it can occasionally mutate and spread in communities with low vaccination coverage, poor sanitation, or overcrowding.

Why It Matters:
Even with a polio-free status, maintaining high vaccination rates and good hygiene practices remains crucial to preventing such outbreaks.
