ZOOPHARMACOGNOSY

 ZOOPHARMACOGNOSY

Scientists have recently observed a case of Zoopharmacognosy in Sumatran orangutans!

An orangutan was seen treating a wound on its body using the local plant Fibraurea tinctoria, highlighting how animals instinctively use nature's resources for healing.

What is Zoopharmacognosy?
It's the process by which wild animals use medicinal plants to treat diseases and protect themselves from parasites.
This natural behaviour shows the deep connection between wildlife and their environment.

Examples:
• Dogs chew grass and vomit to cleanse their stomachs.
• Pregnant lemurs nibble on tamarind leaves to boost milk production.
• Pregnant elephants eat leaves from the Boraginaceae family to induce labor.
These behaviors remind us of the incredible intelligence and adaptability of wildlife.
